But unlike most other browsers Opera was initially a commercial product: there was a free trial period, but after that users needed to pay up or (later) endure advertising. Like all Web browsers of the era, Opera was developed for desktop computers. The Opera Web browser started off as a research project at the Norwegian communications firm Telenor in 1994, but by 1998 had spun off into a separate company. Why would Facebook be interested? What is Opera? And it’s not a default Web browser for virtually any smartphone user. Fundamentally, Opera represents technology that is already baked into every smartphone platform on the planet - a Web browser. ![]() For Facebook, acquiring Opera wouldn’t be like acquiring something like Instagram, which is arguably defined an aspect of today’s mobile lifestyle - photo sharing. ![]()
